Professor Messersmith and Marco d’Ischia (University of Naples) coauthored a perspective in Science to accompany the paper by Lamel et al. published in the same issue. Lampel et al. reported the sequence-dependent assembly and melanin-like pigment formation of tyrosine-containing tripeptides. As illustrated in the photo below, one of the interesting features of this report is that the color of the peptide is dependent on the location of tyrosine (Y) in a tripeptide containing phenylanine (F) and aspartic acid (D), influencing self-assembled structure and in turn, color. The sequence DFY produces a dark melanin-like color whereas YFD produces a light brown color upon exposure to tyrosinase enzyme.
